OBX Bike Ride
I woke rather late at 8:30 am in the cape Hatteras / Outer Banks, NC campground. The actual tent site layout was one of the best I’ve had. I was the only person in a tent, and most of the people in the park were on the ocean side. It was windy which made it feel colder than it was.
Walk On Beach
I went for a long walk up the beach before breakfast. It turned into a three hour walk. The beach was fairly empty and I walked on the harder part of the beach. I walked to a pier that was North of the camp site.
There were many large single family dwellings very close to the beach and it was clear that they had sustained damage from various storms. In some case the beach had been eroded away around the building. Step leading to the beach were five feet above the sand. In one building, the sewage system was exposed and the PVC piping was hanging from the building. The next storm will completely rip the piping off of the house.
There were two homes that had been put on large beams to move the houses. Another house between them had a sign that read, “Expert House Movers”. Depending on the island location there was various degrees of damage. Building continues with bigger houses all along the ocean.
In many places around the island there are large backhoes and bulldozers for moving sand.
Even parts of the pier had been damaged around the main building. Someone told me it takes a while to find a contractor to do the work.
There were many places to pickup worn shells, glass and wood
Hatteras Bike Ride
I drove south on a narrow strip of land to Hatteras at the tip of the island. There’s a ferry port, a lot of souvenier shops, and condos. I bought a sticker for the car and walked around. It looked like there was a bike path near the ferry port and I pulled the bike off the car. I saw a group of people ride by as I was getting the bike ready. As I got to the road, they were coming back and said the bath didn’t go anywhere.
I joined them and had a relaxed ride around Hatteras. They were a family with friends that had come together from different parts of the country for a Thanksgiving vacation. It was nice to ride with a group again and chat. After saying goodbye I rode around for a little while and took photos.
On the way back I found a Food Lion grocery store and everything for dinner. As I drove back to the campsite, the sun was setting. I had hopped to have another spectacular sunset like the night before, but it didn’t materialize. The air was much warmer than the night before.
